This keynote will attempt to explain why a physicist like myself embarks on a journey from quantum mechanics, over space-mission design and computer science, to finally end up at DreamWorks Animation. Along the way we shall touch on topics like technology transfer from academia, as well as the art and compromises of developing tools for visual effects in movie production. Examples will focus on volumetric effects and data structures for fire and fluid animations, fracture and destruction tools, as well as cloud modelling – all showcased through personal experiences from live-action, commercials and feature animation.

A VFX pipeline is no stronger than its weakest asset. In this session I will show how Gimpville used HD Sculpting in ZBrush, procedural tools in Houdini and Mantra to create the extremely detailed troll terrorising  the Norwegian highlands. We will also touch upon some of the VFX animation and rendering challenges we overcame during production.

How one-man company SuperRune met the challenges of creating a Troll and two stunt-doubles for the Norwegian hit movie The Troll Hunter. Rune will go into detail and show how he managed to create a minimalistic creature pipeline in his home office, and how scripting knowledge and great plugins saved him time when creating complex animation and effects in 3DS Max.
